Oksana Lebedieva, founder of Gen.Ukrainian and Gen.Hope, opened the XI Conference on Childhood Studies in Finland

An entire generation of Ukrainian children is growing up with war as part of childhood. Today, this reality is being discussed at one of Northern Europe’s leading platforms on childhood studies and children’s rights.
Oksana Lebedieva, founder of Gen.Ukrainian and Gen.Hope, opened the XI Conference on Childhood Studies in Finland with a presentation titled Childhood in War: The Ukrainian Experience and Gen.Hope’s Approaches to Research and Recovery.
The conference, organized by the Finnish Society for Childhood Studies together with the University of Eastern Finland and partners including SOS Children’s Villages Finland, brings together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and organizations working directly with children.
This year’s theme, Childhood and Boundaries, focused on war, displacement, trauma, identity, and the changing limits of safety and children’s rights – making the Ukrainian experience especially important to this international discussion.
The conference was opened by speeches from Oksana Lebedieva, founder of Gen.Ukrainian and Gen.Hope, Elina Pekkarinen, Finland’s Ombudsman for Children, and Professor Helen Stalford from the University of Liverpool.
Oksana Lebedieva said
«It is a real honor for me to speak here. I truly value the work of the organizers, because this conference, to me, is not only about children themselves, but about how the world thinks about childhood in Ukraine. In the very center of Europe, there is an entire generation of children whose childhood has been shaped by a brutal war»
Gen.Ukrainian works with children affected by war and provides specialised psychosocial support to those who have experienced war-related trauma: loss of parents, captivity, forced deportation, occupation.
The organisation’s practical expertise in developing and implementing systemic mental health solutions is consolidated and scaled through the Gen.Hope Center of Excellence.
Special thanks to Sanna Mustasaari for the invitation and for creating space for this important conversation.
