Normal Responses to Abnormal Events: First Webinar for the MHPSS Gen.Hope Community

A child may not be able to explain traumatic experiences in words, but their behavior can speak volumes. Psychologists, social workers, teachers, parents, and guardians need to understand how to interpret these reactions to support the child during a crisis.
We at Gen.Hope help bring the latest knowledge, practices, and support tools to professionals who work daily with children and adolescents affected by war.

The MHPSS Gen.Hope community is an important part of this work. Today, over 100 psychologists, social workers, educators, and other professionals from across Ukraine are part of this network.
Recently, the community participated in a webinar titled “Psychological Support for Children After Traumatic Events: Basic Skills in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).”

Attendees looked at common reactions to stress and loss, signs of crisis and PTSD, the basic principles of DBT when working with kids and teens, along with techniques for stabilization, grounding, and emotional regulation.
The speaker for the webinar, Yulia Padun, is an accredited dialectical behavior therapist, supervisor, DBT instructor, president of the Ukrainian Association of DBT, and co-founder of the DBT Center Ukraine.
Over 50 professionals joined this event: psychologists, psychotherapists, educators, social workers, MHPSS specialists, and representatives of the civil society sector. Parents and guardians of children who have experienced the trauma of war also participated.

They discussed actual cases about children who have lost their parents, experienced traumatic events, or faced the consequences of war. Participants appreciated the practical focus of the webinar and expressed interest in further training in the DPT method to improve their skills in the field of children’s mental health.
We are planning new webinars involving Ukrainian and international experts, supervising and peer groups, professional spaces for case discussions, and an online platform for specialists.
The webinar recording is available here:
